Todays game was the much anticipated rematch against Devonport Services. A chilly morning unprepared for the fire we were about to rain down on our opponents. As a team that have not lost a game since we had last played them we were prepared for a battle. We got warmed up and ready to go!
The first half begin with pressure from DS holding the ball in our 25 but the solid back line were not letting anything past them. A couple of scrappy breaks for them were nothing compared to the well fielded play out to the wings and plenty of 1-2s going up towards their half. We played our game and we played it well! A counter-attacking onslaught from Dee saw a run down to the line and whether it was a pass or a shot it didn’t matter because it rolled past everyone and into the back of the goal! 1-0!
We kept our composure having rattled them early on. Our press stayed strong forcing a lot of stray passes off the sidelines for us to capitalise. The mids keeping their shape well breaking down their attacks with good tackles and the transfer working smoothly the opposition grew more and more frustrated. We go into half time leading!
We had expected that they would push in the second half but we knew what we needed to do with Jo and Ffi playing the long balls out to the likes of Dee and Becky we were still dominating the game! And rightly so! Our short corner routines getting better and better saw Becky get on the end of what I’m only assuming was a pass across the D(I can’t see that far up the pitch) sends it into the goal taking us 2 up! Now they really didn’t like that one did they?! With growing aggression they weren’t backing down. Great work at the back from Ffi, Kirst, Katie and Jo from a repertoire of short corners from DS they still couldn’t find a goal. Until they did… But we weren’t letting that get the better of us as we still pushed on to the very end. The last few minutes of the game. Truly coming down to the wire they have more short corners. But they were no match for Alfie. A moment of magic if I do say so myself to deny them not once, not twice but three times in succession. Prior to this might I add Alfie tried to clear the ball out, thinking that Michelle may be able to get on the end of it, however instead proceeded to jump over it having lost her stick! Regardless we still got it away and the final whistle bellowed! 2-1 to OC massive! Great victory for us going into the last 3 games of the season. Player was really up for grabs as the whole team put 110% into the game. Becky was awarded the title and rightly so for outstanding play and a goal to add to the tally. Donkey goes to Michelle for not only what I have mentioned but a few other bits too!
